Nice, informative post! Friendster would've been wiped out long ago if not for Asian users.

I'll answer your question about the spellings. The country really was originally called "Filipinas" or "Las Islas Filipinas" (The Islands of Philip II, King of Spain--back when it was a Spanish colony). "Philippines" is just the English translation. It's "Pilipinas" if you're speaking in Tagalog, one of the country's major languages. :)

Nice. Especially the user translation. So I guess once the friends are on then it doesn't matter.

And you know what? I am ok with Xiaonei doing that. Facebook wasn't the first on the planet, and I don't really agree with copyright and patents anyway.

Whoever executes best wins in my opinion!

It did take facebook some time before they decided to start translating the site. The fact that they took a user approach rather than doing it themselves like MySpace was genius: http://snurl.com/4g8b9. (think they got the idea from WordPress/Google)

I think it's crazy that the Chinese version (Xiaonei) is an exact copy and is getting away with it. In the countries where they were not the first to take off, I think it will come down to who has the best functionality and user experience in the long run which will slowly lead to people switching and the better network coming out on top. You kind of saw that here in the U.S. with MySpace people moving to facebook once they realized it was easier to use and didn't crash your computer when visiting a friends profile. If facebook was #1 in every country worldwide, it would be too powerful. Glad to see Friendster didn't completely die!
