Jumping off stuffThe world’s best STEAK
I am looking for the world’s best steak. And I am prepared to scour the globe to find it. These are my top picks so far.
- El gaucho in Swallow St in London. They get their beef from Argentina, which you pick raw from the cuttingboard after some good chat from the waiter. I have been there a few times and it is always excellent
- TigerSpike BBQ, Sydney. We have BBQs on Friday. Our Brazillian designer Icarus buys beef from Hudson Meats on Crown st, covers it in rock salt and then cooks it on our Texas smoker charcoal BBQ. He then slices thin slivers off individually that you collect with forks and I shit you not is was almost number 1. The beef tastes almost aromatic. So tender. Photo is above.
- Andrew Downs, UK. My little sister’s boyfriend Andrew manages the event space at the Tate in London. He got some great cuts from them and seared them in the oven in the morning, then cooked in the oven for 6 minutes that evening, then let them sit for another 6. Served with Foie Gras on top! If you don’t know Andrew find out who he is and get him to cook for you.
- Rock & Pot, Jindabyne, Australia. (Jindy Inn 18 Clyde St) The meat was really good, and you cook it on a hot rock, so we cut little bits off and ate them individually… one of the highlights of the skiing weekend actually. I was even entertained by a couple who was with us having a massive argument and one of them storming out! Nice!
- The best steak in Amsterdam according to my friend David Lette is Cafe Loetje. We had a meal there and I have so say the steak was very impressive. They don’t give you an option to chosse how it is done or the sauce (which was a highlight), which is fine. It was cooked rare to medium rare which all steaks should be. And the chips (fries) being accompanied by dutch mayonaise were almost as good as the petat man in the market.
- Peter Luger’s, Brooklyn New York. I was looking forward to trying this and wasn’t disappointed. The porterhouse for 3 was good, nice flavour helped by the fatty part of the steak. And Sabina took the bone home in her bag. The bacon was aweome too and Luger’s signature sauce was excellent. Look at the picture below. Thanks to my hand model Nell Mooney who is kindly using her finger, just so you can see how big the steak is (was!)
- Don Juan, (Rua das Pedras 178, Buzios). Cool place by the water (well a couple of streets up actually) Argantinian and Brazilian cuts on the menu, so I went with Argentina – which was very very good…
- Kingsley’s steak & Crab house, Wooloomooloo, Australia. You can’t beat Aussie beef, and even though I don’t really like chains and there are three of these, the steak is pretty hard to beat. I haven’t found anything better in Sydney. Great location on Wooloomooloo wharf too, just on the water
- Norwood club, New York. New chef Josie Smith-Malave does a really good job in my opinion. The rib-eye that I had was good. Nice fattier cut of beef. Chips (fries) were good, as was the chocolate fudge type dessert.
And by the way, if you don’t care for beef but love Lamb, contact Jennifer Duplessis, her hubby sells the best stuff, which was almost as nice as the beef on our BBQ! mmmmmm

Oh, I think the best steakhouse I have eaten in is Goodman’s in Moscow. Like anything muscovite it is scarily expensive (beef is Australian and Argentinian) but without a shadow one of the best steak’s I’ve eaten…and that is a LOT…is in this place. Make sure you go!
